Magazine Coasters {Made From a Pottery Barn Catalog}

Before Pinterest, I used to rip pages out of catalogs and magazines of home decor, DIY, and organization ideas that I loved. Now that Pinterest lets us go paperless, I’ve shaken my urge to hang on to every Pottery Barn catalog that comes through our door – but what to do with that huge stack I’ve accumulated through the years? It seems sacrilegious to simply recycle them…so I turned them into coasters!

DIY Magazine Coasters from All Things G&D

I cut each page lengthwise into quarters (4 strips/page) and then folded each strip from one edge to the center, and then the other edge to the center. Lastly, I made one more fold, folding the strip in half. All folds are lengthwise. (Click on link at bottom for more details.)

With all the strips prepared, I started with curling one as tightly as I could, putting little dots of glue (I used Beacon 3-In-1 Advanced Craft Glue which has an “instant grab” so I didn’t need to hold the coiled magazine strips for long) at points along the way. When I got to then of one strip, I started another next to it. I ended when the coaster was wide enough that it was the circumference of one strip, with no overlap.

Folding the magazine strips was by far the most time-consuming part of this project, but I did a little bit here and there. It's a great, mindless project to do while watching a movie!

Who needs a coffee table book? These magazine coasters are conversation piece enough! Keep a set for yourself or gift them to others – they make a great housewarming gift!
