Starting Seeds For the First Time
Growing from seed can be overwhelming for new gardeners. Today I will go through some basic steps to get you growing from seed successfully. There are so many more choices when growing from seed!
Time: 1 Hours Cost: $20 Difficulty: Easy
Using a heat mat will speed up germination. Heat mats come in all sizes from ones that fit a windowsill to larger ones that fit four flats of plants.
Always plant your seeds in a seed starter mix. Its lightweight and allows for better moisture retention and aeration. Garden soil is too heavy and may contain pests and disease.
Always wash out old containers using a bit of bleach ad hot water. It's important to recycle old plant pots whenever you can.
Seed germination happens when the right environmental conditions are met. Most seeds germinate in 7-14 days but some seeds take longer. Start by trying easy seeds such as peas, beans, kale and lettuce.
Plant one seed per cell. As you learnt to grow with seeds you can increase the amount of seeds you plant. Start slowly. Above are pea seeds ready to be planted.
Peas are a cool season crop and grow quickly. Count back six weeks from your normal planting dates so you know when to start your seeds. For example, here we can plant peas in late March so I can start my seeds inside in mid February. Warm season crops such as tomatoes, beans, peppers and corn are started later.
