Bedroom Conversion- Two Become One

We own a modest home and when our kids grew up and left home we decided to convert their two small bedrooms into one larger guest room. In the process we got rid of the sheet rock completely because my husband is not a fan of it. The orange bedroom measured 9 X 10 with a single closet built "out" into it. The yellow bedroom measured 10 X 10 with a single closet built "into" it, both rooms had the same size

Just to note, my husband has many years of construction under his belt so this might be the sort of project that you might need some assistance with.

Here's the view from the other side where the kids bedroom entries were. Inside the closet there was hidden our air exchange vent, the unit was installed after the home was built and this was the only way to put the tubing in to connect with the air unit downstairs.

Here you are viewing the yellow bedroom that has the exterior walls covered with a white foam insulation. The closet was as I mentioned is a single built in one that will be closed off and opened on the other side to extend on the Master bedroom closet...in other words it's going!

Insulation Process Begins

We live in a cold Northern climate and heat conservation is a priority so the additional cost of the insulation will pay itself forward in our energy bills! The installation was done with a staple gun and cuts were made with a utility knife once measurements and markings were completed.

The corner pieces my husband custom created into a singular L shaped piece to be installed after staining and they would simply snap into place.

We are using these Pine Tongue and Groove boards that can be installed offering two different looks. Installation was carried out using a mitre saw and a finishing air nailer using 2" finishing nails.

We did a mock up and took a poll with friends to see what was the most popular, we went with option #2.

The boards were all treated with a water based wood conditioner, easy to apply with a brush and dries very quickly and no odors! The next step was to apply in the same manner the water based stain we chose. As Pine ages it often gains an orange color cast to it which I dislike so the stain we chose was to match the boards as close as we could to their original color. It was by MinWax, an interior water based stain in the shade called Honeydew.

Note the closet and second bedroom door are closed in with the new wood, the entry to the former orange room will be the entrance to the new bedroom.

We chose a Walnut color laminate floating floor for this room and complimented it with a cream, tan and brown wavy patterned rug.

Remember the corner where the air exchange vent was? Look how pretty it looks now with those custom corners stained in a MinWax water based stain called Coffee!

Here is the final reveal after adding a matching brown door on barn style tracks. This room should be maintenance free now for quite some time since it's a guest room that won't see regular use.

It's bright and airy and much more spacious to hang out and watch television in there or sit and read in the sunshine!
