How to Start Seeds in an Egg Carton

Whether you are a novice or avid gardener or want to teach your child some great lessons about being green and sustainable, growing and starting seeds in an egg carton is super quick and easy! It’s a great way to kick off the warmer spring days! Learn how…

Can you just grab the supplies and make it happen? Of course!

But there is so much more to this project. It’s an easy and fun way to teach your child about growing, life, recycling, and being kind to our environment. It’s also a great way to remind us of how precious life is, and the circle of life.

Finally, it’s a great way to reuse old items or trash instead of sending them to the landfill.

Supplies:

12 or 18 cardboard egg carton

2 cups of organic potting soil

6 eggshells crushed (be careful if doing by hand)

2 TBSP coffee grounds

Organic Seeds

Scissors

Old baking sheet

Instructions:

1. Carefully crush the eggshells.
2. In a medium-sized bowl, mix together the organic potting soil, eggshells, and coffee grounds.
3. With scissors, carefully cut apart the egg carton. I like keeping 4 together, but whatever works for you.
4. Take a sharpie and write what you are growing on the carton.
5. With a spoon, place soil in 1/2 of each of the holders.
6. Place 2-4 seeds in each holder.
7. Fill with soil.
8. Place the seedling holders on a baking sheet and gently water. The baking sheet will help to control the mess with the soil and water.

You will have soil remaining, as you water the seeds, you will need to replace with some more.

Keep in a sunny window.

Water gently every other day or as needed, more or less.

As the seedlings grow, you can transplant into a larger container – reuse whatever you have around the house – cups, yogurt containers, etc.

When it’s time to plant, it’s best to start with taking the seedlings outside in the shade for a few hours for a day or two.

Then transfer to the sun for a day or two.
